Led by talented Deaf storytellers Ramas McRae and Melissa Anderson, this event took participants on a fascinating journey through the history of Deaf stories on film. Starting with viewing historic footages through films saved on VHS, floppy disks, and DVDs, Ramas and Melissa showed how Deaf storytelling has evolved over time.
They emphasised the importance of preserving Auslan through moving images, as video allows Deaf storytelling to be captured authentically in sign language. Without it, the true experience of Deaf stories would be lost.
After the screening, participants joined an interactive masterclass. Guided by Ramas and Melissa, they shared their own stories on camera, making sure these were captured and preserved.
This hands-on session provided an inspiring way for participants to connect with Deaf culture and storytelling, while learning techniques to bring their own stories to life.
